I’ve been checking out the Ikea catalog this afternoon, trying to find stuff that I would like to have in our new apt. I’ve found several items that seem just the kind of things I would love to own, but would like to see them in person before making a decision. I’ve always like the spare and clean Scandinavian style, and in fact our current living room setting also has Scandinavian style sofas. I have never been fond of over fussy stuff with too much of anything…carving, design, fabric etc. So Ikea’s designs are right up my alley, so to speak.

Pier 1 Imports announced that it would be shutting down its clearance stores, Pier 1 Kids stores and its catalog and internet business ventures as well. The company is turning to direct marketing and will use direct mailers rather than its TV campaign, which is expected to save $50 million. According to Alex Smith, CEO of Pier 1, the company will be focusing on its Pier 1 stores only and will continue to run the pier1.com site for marketing purposes and not for sale of items.

A total of 100 stores will be closed by the end of the summer while the catalog and internet business will shut by August 31st this year. Other endeavors to get the company back on its feet are going back to their roots of the kind of merchandise the company used to sell, rather than the contemporary versions that have been in the stores lately. Also on on the anvil is store redesign so that items are more visible to shoppers and easier to navigate inside the stores.

Today has been one helluva day for blogging. I have caught up with a lot of things that I wanted to blog about and my To-Blog bookmark is almost empty. I find that having a separate bookmark for things I want to blog about is a good way to keep things organized and easy to find when I have a few spare minutes to blog. I usually add anywhere from 7-10 items to this list on a daily basis and when I have the time, I go through the list and write about the topics one at a time. Most items stored are usually news items that I want to share with my readers and give my opinion on.

The most effective way to communicate is not always the most high tech one. You should never underestimate the power of business cards as these are one of the most powerful marketing tools and will continue to be for a long time to come. Ensure that your business card is easy to read and has a memorable logo or design. A good business card should not have too much information on it either as it just takes away from the impact of the card. Business cards are relatively cheap to design and print so one should not go in for one that is too cheap as it is the most effective way to connect with others.

I love working from home and having my own little space to work in. I started off using just a basic computer desk which has just enough space for all my requirements but not too much that it takes up space unnecessarily. Getting the right office furniture is key to setting up a good working environment and I simply love the way mine is set up, with windows on two sides along with a window sill that gives me extra space to keep reference books close by.

Have you checked out a site called Test Everything? Set up by Jonas John, Test Everything is a cool tool that tests everything in your site, down to CSS and HTML, web proxies, text and images tools, networking tools and social services. I was quite intrigued with it and quickly plugged in my website and selected a number of options that it should check on. Interestingly, it came up with lots of responses and errors that I plan to fix bit by bit. Test it out for yourself and you’ll see what an amazing little gizmo it is!
